Common Environmental Toxin Exposures

One of the most common patterns I see in practice is a patient who has done everything right. They eat well, exercise, sleep reasonably, manage their stress. And they still don’t feel well. Fatigue that won’t lift. Hormones that won’t balance. Weight that won’t budge. Brain fog that comes and goes without explanation.

When I start digging, environmental toxin exposure is one of the first things I look at. Not because it explains everything, but because it’s one of the most consistently overlooked pieces of the puzzle. Most people genuinely don’t know how many chemicals they’re exposed to on a daily basis just through normal, everyday life.

This guide is designed to change that. My goal isn’t to alarm you. It’s to give you a clear picture of where exposures come from, what they may be doing in the body, and what you can actually do about it.

Symptoms That May Signal a High Toxin Burden

Toxin exposure rarely causes one dramatic symptom. More often it shows up as a collection of vague, persistent complaints that don’t seem connected, and that often get dismissed in conventional settings. Here are the patterns I see most frequently in patients who turn out to have significant toxic loads:

  • Persistent fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest or sleep
  • Brain fog: difficulty concentrating, word-finding problems, mental sluggishness
  • Hormonal imbalances: irregular cycles, estrogen dominance, low testosterone, thyroid dysfunction
  • Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight despite lifestyle changes
  • Skin issues: rashes, eczema, acne, or sensitivity that doesn’t resolve
  • Mood changes: anxiety, depression, or irritability without clear cause
  • Digestive complaints: bloating, irregularity, food sensitivities
  • Joint or muscle pain without injury or identifiable cause
  • Frequent illness or slow recovery from infection
  • Chemical sensitivities: strong reactions to fragrances, cleaning products, or new environments

If several of these resonate with you, it’s worth exploring your toxic load, not as a diagnosis but as a starting point for investigation.

Understanding Body Burden: It’s Not One Thing, It’s Everything Together

Here’s something most people don’t realize: the goal of toxin awareness isn’t to avoid any single chemical. It’s to understand that our bodies are managing a cumulative load that comes from the air we breathe, the food we eat, the products we use, and the environments we spend time in.

Your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and skin are constantly working to process and eliminate these compounds. When the load exceeds what your body can handle, especially when combined with other stressors like poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, or gut dysfunction, those systems get overwhelmed. That’s when symptoms appear.

This is why two people can have the same exposures and feel very differently. Genetics, gut health, nutritional status, and stress all influence how well you detoxify. Understanding your individual detox capacity is part of what we assess when we work with patients on environmental health.

Household & Indoor Exposures

These exposures live inside the space you spend the most time in, and they’re often the easiest to reduce once you know where to look.

  • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds): off-gassed from paints, new furniture, carpets, and many cleaning products. Highest in newly renovated or furnished spaces.
  • Formaldehyde: found in pressed wood furniture, some fabrics, and certain building materials. A known respiratory irritant and endocrine disruptor.
  • Phthalates: found in vinyl flooring, fragranced products, and plastic containers. Known hormone disruptors that affect estrogen and testosterone.
  • Flame retardants (PBDEs): used in upholstered furniture and electronics. Accumulate in house dust and in body fat.
  • PFAS (“forever chemicals”): found in nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and food packaging. Highly persistent in the body and associated with thyroid and immune disruption.
  • Mold and mycotoxins: produced by mold in water-damaged buildings. One of the most significant and underdiagnosed sources of chronic illness I see in my practice. Learn more about mycotoxin testing at Sage Wellness.
  • Lead: found in pre-1978 paint and some older plumbing fixtures. Particularly relevant for children and pregnant women.
  • Radon: a naturally occurring soil gas that accumulates in basements. The second leading cause of lung cancer in the US.

What You Can Do

  • Open windows daily to ventilate; even 10 minutes makes a measurable difference
  • Use a HEPA air purifier in bedrooms and main living areas
  • Replace nonstick cookware with cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic
  • Choose fragrance-free or plant-based cleaning products
  • Allow new furniture or renovation materials to off-gas in a well-ventilated space before use
  • Have your home tested for radon (inexpensive kits are widely available) and mold if you suspect water damage

Food & Water Exposures

This is a daily, cumulative exposure, which also makes it one of the highest-leverage places to make changes.

  • Pesticide and herbicide residues: most concentrated in conventionally grown produce, especially the “Dirty Dozen” (strawberries, spinach, peppers, apples, and others)
  • Heavy metals: mercury in large fish (tuna, swordfish, king mackerel); arsenic in rice and some well water; lead in older pipes
  • Bisphenols (BPA/BPS): found in the lining of canned foods and some plastics. Potent endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen
  • Microplastics: found in bottled water, packaged food, and increasingly in tap water. Research into health effects is ongoing
  • Nitrates and nitrites: found in processed meats and some well water. Associated with thyroid disruption and other effects
  • Acrylamide: formed when starchy foods are cooked at high heat (chips, fries, toast). A probable human carcinogen
  • Chlorine and chloramines: added to municipal water as disinfectants. Absorbed through drinking and through skin during showering

What You Can Do

  • Prioritize organic for the Dirty Dozen produce items; conventional is generally fine for the Clean Fifteen
  • Limit large fish to 1-2 servings per week; choose smaller fish like sardines, salmon, and mackerel more often
  • Filter your drinking water. At minimum, use a carbon filter; a reverse osmosis system removes the broadest range of contaminants
  • Reduce canned food consumption; choose glass jars or fresh/frozen alternatives when possible
  • Store and heat food in glass or stainless steel rather than plastic
  • Have well water tested annually for heavy metals, nitrates, and bacteria

Personal Care & Beauty Products

Anything applied to skin enters the bloodstream, sometimes faster than something eaten. Daily product use adds up significantly over months and years.

  • Parabens: preservatives in cosmetics, lotions, and shampoos. Mimic estrogen and have been detected in breast tissue
  • Synthetic fragrances: used in nearly every cosmetic and cleaning product. “Fragrance” on a label can represent hundreds of undisclosed chemicals
  • Aluminum compounds: found in many antiperspirants. Accumulate in tissue and are under investigation for endocrine effects
  • Oxybenzone and other chemical UV filters: in many sunscreens. Absorbed through skin and detected in blood and urine
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: found in some shampoos, nail products, and keratin treatments
  • Phthalates: often hidden in “fragrance” listed on cosmetics and personal care products

What You Can Do

  • Use the EWG Skin Deep database (ewg.org/skindeep) to check the safety rating of your current products
  • Switch to fragrance-free or naturally scented products. Essential oils are not perfect but are a significant improvement over synthetic fragrance
  • Choose mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) over chemical UV filters
  • Reduce your total product count. The fewer products you use daily, the lower your cumulative exposure

Outdoor Air Exposures

Harder to control individually, but worth extra awareness, especially in areas affected by wildfire smoke, which is increasingly relevant in Western North Carolina.

  • Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10): tiny particles from vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, and wildfire smoke. PM2.5 is small enough to enter the bloodstream directly through the lungs
  • Ozone: a secondary pollutant formed from combustion emissions reacting with sunlight. A respiratory irritant at ground level
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): produced by combustion of wood, coal, and vehicle fuel
  • Wildfire smoke: a complex mixture of particulates, carbon monoxide, VOCs, and heavy metals. Even short-term exposure has cardiovascular and respiratory effects

What You Can Do

  • Check your local air quality index (AQI) at airnow.gov before exercising outdoors on high-pollution days
  • On poor air quality days, keep windows closed and run a HEPA air purifier indoors
  • During wildfire events, wear an N95 mask if you need to be outside for extended periods
  • Support your body’s detox capacity through adequate hydration, fiber intake, and antioxidant-rich foods, especially during high-exposure periods

Occupational & Lifestyle Exposures

If your work or daily habits involve any of these, it’s worth discussing with your care team, both for protective strategies and targeted testing.

  • Solvents: painters, manufacturers, dry cleaners, and auto mechanics have significant ongoing solvent exposure
  • Asbestos: still present in many older buildings; relevant for construction and renovation workers
  • Heavy metals: welders, battery workers, pottery glazers, and stained glass artists have direct metal exposure
  • Agricultural chemicals: farmers and landscapers face ongoing pesticide and herbicide exposure
  • Tobacco smoke: including secondhand and thirdhand (residue on surfaces). One of the highest total toxin loads a person can carry
  • Alcohol: a hepatic burden that competes with the liver’s capacity to process other toxins
  • Electromagnetic fields (EMFs): an emerging area of research; current evidence is inconclusive but warrants continued attention

What You Can Do

  • Use appropriate protective equipment and ensure good ventilation in occupational settings
  • If you work in a high-exposure field, consider annual toxin screening as part of your preventive care
  • Support liver function with adequate protein, B vitamins, and cruciferous vegetables
  • Minimize alcohol consumption, particularly if you are actively working on detoxification

Quick Wins: Changes You Can Make This Week

You don’t have to overhaul your entire life at once. Start here:

  1. Filter your water. A basic carbon pitcher filter is a meaningful improvement. A reverse osmosis system is better.
  2. Replace your nonstick cookware. Cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic are safer and often more durable.
  3. Switch to fragrance-free products. Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and cleaning sprays are easy swaps with high impact.
  4. Open your windows. Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air. Daily ventilation helps.
  5. Eat organic for your highest-use produce. You don’t have to go fully organic. Just prioritize the Dirty Dozen.
  6. Stop storing food in plastic. Glass containers and stainless steel bottles are inexpensive and eliminate a daily exposure.
  7. Look up your personal care products. Check 2-3 of your most-used items on EWG Skin Deep and replace the lowest-rated ones.
