Green Pregnancy: Functional Wellness Coaching for Conception and Pregnancy

Please note: The Green Pregnancy program is a functional wellness coaching and education service. Dr. Andersson is a chiropractor, not an obstetrician or midwife. This program is designed to complement, not replace, your prenatal medical care. We strongly encourage all patients to work with a qualified OB-GYN or midwife throughout their pregnancy journey.

What Is Green Pregnancy?

Green Pregnancy is a whole-person, functional wellness approach to preparing for and supporting a healthy pregnancy. “Green” reflects our commitment to three core pillars: reducing your body’s toxic burden, nourishing yourself with clean nutrition and professional-grade supplementation, and understanding the genetic and methylation factors that influence your fertility and your baby’s development.

Rather than waiting until a positive pregnancy test to start thinking about health, the Green Pregnancy approach focuses on preparing the body intentionally, ideally beginning three to six months before conception. That foundation carries forward through pregnancy itself, supporting both mother and baby at every stage.

Who This Is For

This program may be a good fit if you:

  • Are planning to conceive and want to optimize your health beforehand
  • Have concerns about environmental exposures, toxin burden, or the health of your home or workplace environment
  • Want to understand your nutritional status and address any gaps before pregnancy
  • Have a history of irregular cycles, hormonal imbalances, or previous pregnancy complications and want additional wellness support alongside your medical care
  • Are already pregnant and want to focus on clean nutrition, toxin reduction, and lifestyle habits throughout your pregnancy
  • Have a personal or family history of MTHFR mutations or methylation issues and want guidance on what that means for prenatal nutrition

The Three Pillars of Green Pregnancy

1. Environmental Toxin Reduction

The body’s toxic burden matters more during pregnancy than at almost any other time in life. Many environmental chemicals, heavy metals, and endocrine-disrupting compounds can cross the placental barrier, making pre-conception detoxification and ongoing toxin avoidance a meaningful priority.

Our environmental toxin coaching covers:

  • Identifying and reducing exposure to heavy metals (including lead, mercury, and cadmium), which can accumulate in the body over years and affect fetal neurodevelopment
  • Understanding and minimizing endocrine disruptors found in plastics, personal care products, cleaning products, and food packaging
  • Reviewing your home and workplace environment for mold, mycotoxins, and other airborne toxins that can affect maternal and fetal health
  • Guidance on food choices that minimize pesticide and chemical exposure, including the role of organic produce and clean sourcing
  • Safe and gentle support for the body’s natural detoxification pathways before and during pregnancy, using approaches appropriate for the prenatal period

2. Clean Nutrition and Professional-Grade Supplementation

Nutritional status at the time of conception and throughout pregnancy has a profound impact on outcomes for both mother and baby. Many women enter pregnancy with nutritional gaps they are unaware of, including in nutrients that are critical during the earliest weeks of fetal development.

Our nutrition and supplement coaching includes:

  • Personalized guidance on anti-inflammatory, whole-food eating patterns that support hormonal balance and fertility
  • Education on key prenatal nutrients including folate (in bioavailable forms for those with MTHFR variants), choline, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D
  • Recommendations for professional-grade prenatal supplements from practitioner-only lines, chosen based on your individual lab findings and health history
  • Guidance on foods and supplements to avoid or approach with caution during pregnancy
  • Blood sugar and metabolic support, as stable blood sugar is foundational to both fertility and a healthy pregnancy
  • Gut health support, since a balanced microbiome influences nutrient absorption, immune function, and the microbial environment your baby is born into

3. Genetic and Methylation Preparation

Genetic factors, particularly those affecting the methylation pathway, can significantly influence fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and how the body processes certain nutrients. Understanding your genetic profile before conception allows you to make more personalized and targeted choices about supplementation and nutrition.

Our genetic and methylation coaching covers:

  • MTHFR and related methylation gene variants, which affect how the body processes folate and B vitamins and are particularly relevant to neural tube development
  • Genes related to detoxification capacity, which influence how efficiently your body clears environmental toxins
  • Genetic factors affecting nutrient metabolism, including vitamin D receptor, omega-3 processing, and iron regulation
  • Practical guidance on what your genetic findings mean for your supplement choices and dietary priorities during pregnancy

Functional Lab Panels We Review

Functional lab review is central to our Green Pregnancy coaching. Rather than relying on standard prenatal bloodwork alone, we look at a broader picture of health that helps us identify nutritional gaps, hormonal patterns, toxic burden, and genetic factors worth addressing before and during pregnancy. These are wellness-oriented reviews, not diagnostic evaluations. All clinical interpretation of lab results should be done in partnership with your OB-GYN or midwife.

Lab panels we may review include:

  • Nutrient Status Panel: Assesses levels of key prenatal nutrients including vitamin D, folate, B12, iron, ferritin, zinc, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids
  • Hormone Panel: Reviews sex hormones, thyroid function (including TSH, free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibodies), adrenal markers including cortisol, and relevant cycle hormones for pre-conception assessment
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: Evaluates blood sugar regulation, liver and kidney function, and electrolyte balance
  • Inflammatory Markers: Including hs-CRP and homocysteine, both of which are relevant to pregnancy outcomes and cardiovascular health during pregnancy
  • Heavy Metal and Environmental Toxin Testing: Reviews burden of heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium) and may include mycotoxin screening or environmental chemical panels depending on history and concerns
  • Gut Health and Microbiome Panels: Assess gut barrier integrity, digestive function, and microbial balance, all of which influence nutrient absorption and immune health during pregnancy
  • Genetic and Methylation Panel: Reviews MTHFR and related methylation gene variants, detoxification genes, and nutrient metabolism SNPs to personalize supplement and nutrition guidance
  • Food Sensitivity Testing: Identifies inflammatory food reactions that may affect gut health, immune function, and overall nutritional status

How We Work With You

Your Green Pregnancy coaching begins with a comprehensive wellness consultation in which we review your full health history, current labs, lifestyle, environment, and goals. From there, we develop a personalized coaching plan that fits where you are in your journey, whether you are actively preparing for conception or already pregnant.

We work closely alongside your OB-GYN, midwife, or other prenatal care providers. Our role is to complement their medical care with targeted functional wellness coaching, nutritional guidance, environmental support, and supplement education. We are not a replacement for obstetric care.

Appointments are available in-office in Brevard, NC, and via telehealth for patients throughout North Carolina.
